Would it be legal to have a police style bar light on top of a normal sedan, as long as it isnt connected to anything and you dont do any police officer things with it, like pull someone over?

No. As far as I'm aware, having red and blue lightbars is illegal as impersonating an officer.
Having a lightbar that is a different set of colors though, that might be more acceptable.

That probably depends on the state. It likely can't be red or blue or operate while moving unless you have some kind of permit.

I wouldn't do it as a cop could easily say you were impersonating a public servant, which is a felony.

I think the advice of Steve Lehto is needed on this one, though I would say that while awesome, it's probably a terrible idea. You risk pissing off the cops and getting written up for "impersonating an officer", which is not good.

But if the lights arent connected to a power source is it still a light bar then?

I believe even that is illegal.

I wouldnt do it, its just a thought that crossed my mind

Thats why I wondered if its legal as long as its not connected to a power source. Its essentially a prop at that point, a prop that doesnt light up

If they are red and blue, even if not actually connected, they are illegal in most places.

I wasnt going to, The thought just crossed my mind and I was curious to know if it was legal

Bottom line cops are dicks and would defiantly give someone a hard time over this.

If it's red and/or blue it's illegal in most states, even if not connected. You can get away with yellow, purple (maybe, this is a standard funeral light bar color, you need to make sure it can't be easily confused for blue), and possibly green (though some forestry services use that color, so no guarantees).

Just curious, why are you looking to do this?

Just get the clear led bar that flashes yellow. You usually see them on escort vehicles. Most people will think your a cop (and get out of your way). This was what I was going to put on my car if I ever ran a gumballesque rally.

Im not, Im just bored. And when Im bored, my mind wanders and I think about this kind of stuff

In some states, possibly. But you really should check and double check before attempting. There are vintage police vehicle collectors that have gotten in trouble before for what were basically just show cars.

I know a guy who has done this to a classic he recreated as a Sheriff's car. Next time I chat with him I'll ask if he leaves it on the car when going from place to place. He pretty much takes it to shows and parades.

I wonder what the Definition of "Impersonating an Officer" is, It may not be just driving a car that resembles a cop car. I'd assume you have to do something Law Enforcementy

Yes. The law about this stuff is super vague for that reason, if anyone might mistake it for a real cop lightbar, it's illegal.

that kinda sucks

Legally, if you have a black and white crown vic, you can be ticketed or arrested for it in some states. It's not always exercised, but the law allows for it.
